Women are the fabric that holds families and communities together.
Everywhere in the world, women weave and mend the social fabric of our communities. When emergencies strike, women overcome immense obstacles to provide care and safety for others – even as their own vulnerability to poverty, malnutrition, sexual violence and exploitation, sexually transmitted infections, unplanned pregnancy and unassisted childbirth increases. In Northern Kenya, during the famine that struck the Horn of Africa, I met Hawa Ali who was pregnant with triplets. Suffering from malnutrition, 27-year-old Hawa had been in a UNFPA-supported maternity shelter for four months because of the high risks associated with her pregnancy. Thanks to this shelter, Hawa was able to deliver safely and receive the postnatal care she needed.

During the Libyan crisis, thousands of TNC refugees fled across the southern borders of Tunisia and has settled in Choucha camp. UNFPA was present on the borders since March 2011. After rapid needs assessments and in coordination with international and national agencies, UNFPA has settled a contingency plan to face the crisis. Suite à la crise libyenne survenue en février 2011, la frontière Tuniso- Libyenne de Ras Jdir a vu un afflux important de réfugiés de toutes nationalités et l’installation de camps à 7 Kms de la frontière par les autorités tunisiennes en coordination avec des ONG internationales et locales. Environ 17000 réfugiés ont traversé les frontières au début de la crise.

TRIPOLI, Libya — As conflict in Libya still rages, responding to humanitarian needs within the country and at the borders with Tunisia and Egypt continue to be a challenge. UNFPA’s country offices in the region have mobilized efforts to work with local partners in Libya to provide emergency reproductive health care, but also important psychosocial services to affected populations.
