Since February 17, fleeing the fighting, 235,000 people crossed the Tunisian-Libyan border to seek refuge in one of the four camps in the border area of Ras Jedir. Some are in transit waiting to be repatriated, others settle indefinitely in the hope of being greeted quickly by a third country. But after the ordeal of war and exodus, they have to face new challenges.
The Storm:
Windblown tents, toilets on the ground, trauma. The night of Friday, April 29 was another hardship for Jdir Ras refugees. The sand storm was particularly cruel. Some of them stayed up all night to keep their tent stand; others took shelter wherever they could.
Rebuilding after the storm:
Facing together this additional challenge, refugees and humanitarian volunteers are more united than ever. The collective effort has allowed the rebuilding of the tents during the day.
This new situation has also accelerated the resettlement of the camp, taking into account the recommendations of UNFPA, particularly as regards the protection of vulnerable populations including families and single women relocating them in a dedicated secure area.
